I was listening to the latest episode last night and your comment about KiCad and open tooling resonated. I had a similar thought last week when listening to a podcast with the founder of Atopile. I predict that the open nature of KiCad along with a renewed interest in HW tooling from modern SW guys will result in a whole new open EDA ecosystem for PCB design over the next 10 years and the big guys will be left behind. It's the ARM vs Intel battle. And we'll all be better off for it. The current tooling ecosystem is sooo antiquated and the learning curve is unbelievably steep.

With regard to electric space propulsion you would rather have pure non reactive thrust instead of accelerating a gas for example. But if you are accelerating gas, it may be advantageous to charge up the acceleration maximally, but it may not bode well with a timely movement from an orbit. The point is when you are in orbit you have left most air friction and have a purely Newtonian energy scenario which could be slowly additive. But there have been some conjecture of pretty normal pure electrical propulsion, like photon pressure from a laser, maybe EM drive, and maybe some sort of polarization of matter that makes it displace as being somehow off balance internally. I personally don't understand people's idea of warp drive because it seems to me you are still stuck to the part of space you are extending so I don't know.

An old friend, who has since passed, got his first lathe from a WWII era German submarine. Coincidentally, he also designed and made environmental monitoring equipment. If only you'd talked about international antiquities theft it would have been the trifecta. (For an unassuming guy he had a very interesting life.)

Vibe Coding seems like a good idea, but in the cheesy '50s scifi film _The Invisible Boy_ the computer had slowly suggested minor code changes over a twenty-year period until it was ready to take over the world. IIRC It started by promising to save 2ms on each vector calculation, but the humans didn't care until it promised to raise the stock price 15% per year.

But for a *good* movie about a computer taking over, watch _Colossus: The Forbin Project_ (1970)

I'd be interested in hearing you elaborate on "Dave is far more on it [...] The fact he isn’t dragged down by the BS surface politics / semantics / conformity-driven groupthink".

What do you think about X and how they claim to be for freedom of speech, yet silence people who think otherwise about the H-1B visa issue?

Yeah, you could be right that I've had a condescending tone and that Dave and I's long history together has some snark that pops out after 14 years, but if you're only hearing my tone, you ain't listening with open ears. I'd wager you're just used to hearing his tone more.

> The fact he isn’t dragged down by the BS surface politics / semantics / conformity-driven groupthink actually makes his perspective pretty valuable

Dave has lots of valuable perspectives, but his devotion to Elon and the X brand is not one I will ever agree with.

I have been listening to the amp hour for so many years, and consider it one of my favorite rituals. I wanted to share a thought with Chris: Dave is far more on it than you seem to give him credit for. The fact he isn't dragged down by the BS surface politics / semantics / conformity-driven groupthink actually makes his perspective pretty valuable, and you often laugh it off. I may be alone in this, but man, sometimes you sound so condescending and it can be frustrating as a listener when your take is clearly way off but your tone still so dismissive and superior. Credit to Dave for putting up with that relatively well.

That being said, I admire you both for the energy and effort you bring to the community and hope the podcast (and importantly your relationship as co hosts) lives on for a long time!

Thanks for another great episode, guys! Appreciate the reference to touch grass, that was new to me :)

If you want to get into woodworking for not very much $$$, there are a ton of projects you can make with a pocket hole jig, a clamp on saw guide, and a bench sander. Oh and a circular saw, but you already have one, right? Buy an aftermarket blade for it. Dust collection is a thing, but if you move outside to do your cuts and sanding, then nature will take care of it!

Hi Chris!

You have referred now in multiple shows the second interview with Jay Carson, where he talked about his embedded linux SBC journey during COVID. I'd like to ask, what episode is the first interview with Jay? I presume in this show he talks about his 1$ MCU project, but I cannot find this show in the episode index.

Thanks and regards,
Mate

Dave saying about phone lines, and I have a phone junction box outside, tools required to open it are none, because the phone techs will never actually use the M10 bolt on the underside to do more than close it by hand. Years ago with old payphones the military base they came to empty the pay phone box, and according to the meter at the exchange it should have been full, but inside the box there was only a single coin.those were the old grey phone boxes, where the coin acceptor generated pulses on the phone line, 5c per pulse, so you would have multiple pulses, depending on the coin inserted, with the line being terminated during metering pulses by a 2k4 resistor.

Why yes there was a lot of purchases of small crocodile clips, and 2k2 resistors, from the local electronics store, though it would often work simply by using wet toilet paper across the 2 bare sections of phone line conveniently by the phone itself. Note these phones were right outside the security offices, with 24 hour visibility to the guard commander as well.

I may or may not have made my own butt set, using an old carbon mic phone, as there is a lot less to contain in there if you do not need to have a ringer, and knew where the base incoming lines were. Lots of 212 area code New York lines that you could call for free, as those lines could dial internationally. Way too many special intel people in the camp that us normal trainees interacted with, and they in some cases had no visible rank, but outranked the base command for some reason.

Sure! If it hasn't been discussed already, I can create a post. First, I'll have to create a reddit account!

Btw, Chris, I got to check out some of your live designs on Golioth. I had to be a little sneaky because it's during work hours, but totally worth it. Great content!

Hi Guys,

Love your podcast, always something interesting. However, I must take a minute to correct some of the incorrect assumptions that I heard on this one. For context as a young man, I produced PCBs for several years in the 70's and 80's. So, when I heard that they rolled solder on the boards and that's why it was all wrinkly under the solder mask. I thought I should explain how it's done. The solder was electroplated on as tin/lead (From a tank that contained Solder anodes. But it was plated as elemental tin and lead in the proper ratio). This was then used as an etchant resist and protected the copper from the etchant. After etching the boards are fluxed between flux soared rollers on the way into a reflow oven where the tin and lead are melted into the solder alloy. Goes in dull and gray and comes out bright and shiny. I skipped past the resist application and copper plating before the tin/lead plating and the resist removal prior to etching, but, my point wasn't to explain the entire process, but if you would like me to follow up, I can bring it from the beginning to the end. I have done every process.

Now as far as electrical test we did it very differently back in the day. None of this flying probe nonsense. Which by the way I believe is a netlist generated process. We used to use "Bed of Nails" test machines that had a .1" x .1" grid of spring-loaded test pins. A translating fixture would map these pins to another set of pins that lined up to all of the component holes. (None of this Surface mount rubbish.) Then a thoroughly inspected board would be used to program the the matrix with everything that should show as a short. The tester would then compare every point to every other point and if something was shorted that shouldn't have been or something that should have been shorted wasn't the machine would stop testing and display the coordinates in question with an error code (Short or Open).

Anyway, there's my $0.02,
Glenn

Thanks guys for mentioning my R6581T OLED upgrade project video!.......and much thanks to MickleT over on the EEVBlog forums for the reverse engineering.

Interestingly, there's no direct handling of ASCII characters on the STM32 code!
So, it reads a serial data stream intended for a VFD controller, intercepts it, and processes the data to display on an SSD1322 OLED. It takes each packet of incoming data, unpacks the character bitmaps and annunciator flags, and stores them in a frame buffer. The code then scales and converts these bitmaps for the SSD1322 OLED's pixel format, handling both the main and auxiliary display lines. Finally, it sends the formatted frame buffer data to the OLED, updating the display in real-time based on the intercepted VFD data.

Even the article in the link makes this distinction:

"And don’t get us wrong: we love comments that help improve a project. There’s a not-so-fine line between “why didn’t you design it with trusses to better hold the load?” and “why did you paint it black, because blue is the superior color”. You know what we mean. Constructive criticism, good. Pointless criticism, bad."

(which, coincidentally, is the exact same example that Chris and Dave gave for pointless nitpicking).
